What Can Massage Do?
Massage can improve circulation, reduce stress, enhance energy levels, help with muscle relaxation, improve breathing and digestion, help with balance and posture, tone the body, strengthen joints, and boost immune systems.
Deep Tissue Massage
This massage differs from Relaxing/Swedish massage by accessing the deeper layers of muscle and other tissues. By doing this, it helps to break down adhesions by relieving chronic pain, helps reduce inflammation when recovering from an injury or surgery, and to help restore/improve flexibility and range of motion (ROM).
Relaxing/Swedish Massage
This style uses different techniques that have more of a softer touch which is ideal for someone who is new to massage. The massage uses a firm but gentle pressure on the skin and first layer of muscle. It is ideal for relaxation, release from muscle tension and for short-term pain relief. It is a great massage for de-stressing and allowing to be present with oneself.
Thai Massage, Mat (Northern Style)
Thai massage is preformed while the client is fully clothed with clothing that is easy to move in. This massage is performed on the floor using a Mat, with pillows for support. This allows for a wider range of mobility during the massage. This style uses direct pressure, by using compression that incorporates stretching and point work. It stimulates the musculoskeletal system, bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, ligaments. It has been described as combining a session with a massage therapist, an acupressure therapist, and a chiropractor, all at the same time, while completing a yoga session.
Pregnancy Massage
This massage has the client lying on their side, as they cannot lie face down. Pillows are utilized for comfort underneath the head, one in front for the arm and one underneath the knee. With a few other precautions, there is no harm for the mother and baby to receive a massage throughout the entirety of the pregnancy. The massage does have many benefits such as comfort while the body is changing, assist with calming anxiety, reducing swelling and relieve muscle pain caused from changes in center of gravity and growth.
Reflexology/Thai Foot Massage
A combination of both techniques is typically used for a session but can be separated if needed. The session starts off with a hot towel wrap of the feet to facilitate relaxation. Both technique styles use point work to help relieve the over sensistivity of nerve endings and break up crystallization deposits of the whole foot. TFM uses more of a stretching style and the use of a Thai stick made of rosewood for point work. The experience can leave the client relaxed, balanced, and with more of an” awareness” in their feet.
Mass Stretch
Stretching can be incorporated with massage or by itself. In a Masstretch session, active, passive, static and assisted stretching will normally be used. With the use of different techniques, such as breathing and resistance, more flexibility, along with an increased range of motion (ROM), can be achieved. While engaging in stretching, it should be painless, relaxing and gentle on the body.
IASTM: Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Moblization
IASTM includes Graston/scrapping, Cupping and Tok-Sen. The use of these tools is used to release fascia tissue, improve circulation, and can help with scare tissue release and lymphatic circulation. After treatment, the area can be pink, red or develop petechiae (small purple spots), depending on the person.
